Many children are simply not eating as healthy as they should. Big surprise! Perhaps excessive snacking and picky eating habits are holding them back. Mom and Dad may cook very little due to a busy work schedule and depend heavily on take-out or processed foods. Child obesity is a growing problem (no pun intended), child hood diabetes is growing. ADHD is another notable concern getting more attention due to the controversy over conventional treatments. We all need to eat healthier but with as quickly as children grow they need more than junk food and quick TV dinners. Proper nutrition is required to ensure they have a great start in life. Many buy bulk methyl sulfonyl methane are not setting very good examples.
A key component to a child's diet should be Essential Fatty Acids (EFA). EFA's are the 'good fats'. These are fats that are absolutely required for us to function optimally. These fatty acids are critical in the formation of cells, the building blocks of our bodies. More specifically, they support critical functions related to the cardiovascular, nervous, immune and reproductive systems. Unfortunately, our bodies cannot produce EFA's. We must ensure that we consume enough on a daily basis. There are two groups of EFA's; Omega 3 and Omega 6. (Please note, Omega 9 is not considered 'essential' since our bodies can produce Omega 9). ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid) is the main Omega 3 fatty acid whereas Linoleic Acid is the primary Omega 6 fatty acid. A healthy person will convert ALA to EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). Salmon Oil is a very good source of Omega 3. Where flaxseed oil is high in ALA many Salmon Oils offer EPA and DHA. A healthy body will convert some ALA to EPA but the success of this conversion depends upon diet and one's physical state of health. EPA, for examples is then processed by the body and contributes to many key bodily functions. Thus, Salmon Oil with EPA and or DHA provides some benefit in that it is not dependant upon the ALA conversion process.
There are several reasons to add Salmon Oil capsules to a child's diet;
1 - Benefits to ADHD and depression.
An Australian clinical study of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD or ADHD) has shown dramatic improvements in the children's attention span, reading performance and overall behavior by adopting Salmon oil into their diets. This addition of Essential Fatty Acids may offer a wonderful alternative to conventional medicines and their side-effects. Depression is a problem with many North Americans as is Omega 3 deprivation. Other studies have shown improvements in those diagnosed with depression due to the positive impact of the Essential Fatty Acids on the brain.
2 - Benefits to mood swings and concentration
As stated earlier, EFAs are major building blocks of the brain. Therefore, it is no surprise that it would benefit others without a behavioral disorder. Don't call Super Nanny just yet. For those children and adults without ADD or depression, Salmon oil also has shown promise in aiding mood swings and attention span.
3 - Strengthen their Cardiovascular System
Heart disease is a major problem in adults in North America. Many children are inactive and more each year obese. Adding a salmon oil supplement is one small way to improve their cardiovascular health and perhaps even help them to prevent the on set of heart disease. Perhaps, they'll even feel good enough to get away from the video games and get outside for a change.
4 - Better Eye Sight
Omega 3 is a major structural component of the retinal cells in the eye. Children grow quickly and so do their eyes. As quickly as children grow, Doctor's recommend regular check-ups to ensure their eye sight is meeting requirements. They need the basic building blocks to ensure their eye sight keeps pace with their growth.
5 - PMS - For those with daughters, Omega 3 has been shown to even reduce cramping associated with their menstrual cycle. That's of benefit to everybody in the house!
I have taken Salmon oil capsules for many years. My husband has recently started adding it to his diet and has felt improved mental focus. Having done the research, we now plan to add it to our daughter's diets and expect to see some positive improvements. We plan to report back as to what we observe relative to their behaviors, attention span and the results at school. Please note, Salmon Oil with EPA is not available everywhere but can be conveniently located on-line. Finally, eating properly when young (or old) is one essential but easy thing that we can do NOW! Do something proactive to avoid or at least reduce the risk of serious illnesses that currently impact so many adults in North America.
